This book is written by Dr. Suresh K. Pandey (Director, SuVi Eye Institute & Lasik Laser Center, and published by Maple Press, New Delhi. Medicine is considered to be one of the oldest professions in the world. However, like all other fields, the medical field has also seen tremendous change in the last century. Yet, at the very core, medicine is not just a science, but equally an art. The best of technology cannot downplay the role of care, compassion, communication and comforting. With the rapid advances in medical science, we have been able to control many dreaded diseases and find newer treatments, which have resulted in much longer life expectancy compared to a few decades ago. At the same time, this has also resulted in higher expectations from medical science. With increasingly expensive healthcare, we have now reached a stage, where patients find it difficult to accept adverse outcomes. In developing countries like India, there are too many problems because healthcare is largely out of pocket, the general awareness about diseases is low and the facilities at the state-run hospitals are grossly inadequate for our huge population, and last but not the least a sub-optimal doctor-population ration. In such a scenario, the medical facilities are largely provided by private clinics and private nursing homes, but the increasing costs and almost provocative media coverage has caused a lot of mistrust in the general population against doctors. In this background, doctors find it difficult to run their practice, satisfy their patients, avoid trouble and also lead happy lives themselves.
Entrepreneurship for Doctors: How to Build Your Own Successful Medical Practice is aimed at young doctors, the authors have tried to give some tips for establishing an ethical practice and handling the various problems that doctors face today.
