Today, the medical community is in mourning over the loss of a 25-year-old resident doctor at Maulana Azad Medical College, who tragically took his own life. A brilliant mind who secured All India Rank 1 in NEET UG 2017, his death has shocked us all. It is yet another stark reminder of the silent mental health struggles that many young doctors face, often behind locked doors, unseen and unheard. According to a study, 358 suicide deaths among medical students (125), residents (105) and physicians (128) had been reported between 2010 and 2019; additionally, 1,166 students dropped out of medical colleges; there were several appeals for intervention from students and parents. The pressure on medical students and resident doctors is immense. From the grueling hours to the burden of expectations, the journey to becoming a doctor can sometimes come at the cost of their mental well-being. In this case, no suicide note was found, and while we may never know his specific struggles, we do know that his story is not isolated. So many resident doctors are silently battling the weight of academic pressure, isolation, and the emotional toll of medical practice. It’s time to break the silence and take action: Mental health support: Hospitals and medical colleges must prioritize counseling services and peer support programs. Work-life balance: A review of resident doctors' work hours and academic loads is crucial to reduce burnout. Open communication: Encouraging open discussions about mental health can destigmatize seeking help. His life was filled with promise, but his passing reminds us of the urgent need for systemic change in the medical field. Let’s work together to prevent another bright future from fading too soon.
