Celebrating the 39th National Eye Donation Fortnight!

Celebrating the 39th National Eye Donation Fortnight! Every year, from August 25th to September 8th, we celebrate National Eye Donation Fortnight to raise awareness about the importance of eye donation and corneal transplantation. A Brief History of Corneal Transplantation Corneal transplantation, or keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure that replaces a damaged or diseased cornea with a healthy one from a donor. The first successful human corneal transplant was performed in 1905 by Dr. Eduard Zirm in Austria. This groundbreaking surgery marked the beginning of modern eye banking and corneal transplantation, bringing the gift of sight to millions around the world. Today, corneal transplants are one of the most common and successful transplant surgeries. Interesting Facts About Corneal Tissue 1. No Blood Vessels: Unlike most tissues, the cornea is avascular, meaning it contains no blood vessels. This unique feature reduces the likelihood of rejection after a transplant, making corneal transplants highly successful. 2. Transparent Window: The cornea is transparent, allowing light to pass through and focus on the retina, enabling us to see clearly. Its clarity and ability to refract light make it essential for vision. 3. High Regeneration Capacity: Corneal tissue has a remarkable ability to heal and regenerate. Minor injuries to the cornea can often heal quickly without leaving scars. 4. Immune Privilege: The cornea has a special status called "immune privilege," meaning it is less likely to be attacked by the body's immune system. This reduces the risk of transplant rejection compared to other donor tissues. How You Can Make a Difference By pledging to donate your eyes, you can give the gift of sight to someone in need. One donor can restore vision for up to two people! Let's spread awareness and encourage more people to participate in this noble cause. ๐Ÿ“… Mark your calendars for the National Eye Donation Fortnight and be a part of this life-changing mission! ๐Ÿ’ก Interesting Fact: Did you know that approximately 12 million people worldwide suffer from corneal blindness, and 1 in 70 individuals will suffer from vision impairment due to corneal damage in their lifetime? Your pledge can be the light in someone's darkness. ๐ŸŒŸ
