कुछ हाथ सिर्फ सर्जरी नहीं करते, वो ईश्वर का रूप बनकर असंभव को संभव कर दिखाते हैं। आज भारतीय चिकित्सा जगत का एक ऐसा ही चमत्कारिक अध्याय हमेशा के लिए शांत हो गया।
2017 का वो पल भला कौन भूल सकता है, जब पूरी दुनिया की सांसें थमी हुई थीं। ओडिशा के सिर से जुड़े जुड़वाँ मासूम बच्चों—जग्गा और कालिया—को नई जिंदगी देने का जो असंभव सपना पद्मश्री डॉ. अशोक कुमार महापात्र ने देखा था, उसे उन्होंने AIIMS दिल्ली में 16 घंटे की मैराथन सर्जरी के बाद सच कर दिखाया। जब उन बच्चों ने अलग होकर पहली बार सांस ली, तो सिर्फ एक ऑपरेशन सफल नहीं हुआ था, बल्कि करोड़ों भारतीयों की दुआएं कबूल हुई थीं।
AIIMS दिल्ली में अपने 42 वर्षों की तपस्या और AIIMS भुवनेश्वर के पहले डायरेक्टर के रूप में उन्होंने न जाने कितने अंधेरे घरों में उम्मीद का चिराग जलाया और अनगिनत युवा डॉक्टरों को तराशा। साल 2025 में देश ने उन्हें पद्मश्री से नवाजा, लेकिन उनका असली सम्मान तो उन हजारों मरीजों की मुस्कान और दुआओं में बसता है जिन्हें उन्होंने मौत के मुंह से बाहर निकाला।
2 नवंबर 2026 को डॉ. महापात्र का हमारे बीच से चले जाना चिकित्सा जगत के लिए एक ऐसी अपूरणीय क्षति है, जिसे शब्दों में बयां करना नामुमकिन है।

Leading a brilliant team at AIIMS New Delhi, Dr. Mahapatra accomplished the unimaginable—separating craniopagus conjoined twins Jaga and Kalia in a grueling 16-hour final surgery. When those two little boys survived against every conceivable medical odd, it was not just a surgical triumph; it was a testament to a man whose courage, precision, and compassion knew no bounds.
For 42 glorious years at AIIMS New Delhi and as the founding Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, he was far more than a doctor—he was a beacon of hope for the helpless and a guiding light for generations of young surgeons. While the nation honored his monumental service with the Padma Shri in 2025, his greatest medals remain the thousands of lives he pulled back from the brink and the countless families he kept whole.
Legends like Dr. Ashok Kumar Mahapatra never truly die; they live on in every life they saved and every mind they inspired.
