Eyes play a crucial role in our lives, and imagining life without them is impossible. Close your eyes for a moment and experience the darkness – this is the reality for millions who suffer from blindness. Your eyes, which serve you throughout your life, can continue to illuminate someone else’s world even after you are gone. However, myths and superstitions hold many people back from pledging their eyes for donation. The fear of being born blind in the next life is one of the biggest barriers stopping people from this noble cause. Because of such misconceptions, millions suffering from corneal blindness are left in eternal darkness. Globally, every five seconds, an adult loses their sight, and every minute, a child is affected by blindness. Around 43 million people worldwide suffer from blindness. In India, approximately 18 million individuals are visually impaired. The five major causes of blindness in the country are cataracts, glaucoma, refractive errors, retinal diseases, and corneal diseases. About 1% of total blindness in India is due to corneal blindness. Nearly 120,000 people suffer from total corneal blindness, and about 1 million people have significant vision impairment due to corneal issues. Additionally, around 6.8 million people have at least one affected cornea. Each year, 25,000 to 30,000 patients become blind due to corneal diseases. Among them, 50% could regain sight through corneal transplants. India needs at least 250,000 corneas annually, but only about 50,000 eye donations take place each year. Eye Donation Fortnight (August 25 – September 8) is observed nationwide to dispel myths surrounding eye donation and promote awareness about corneal transplants. The highest number of eye donations occur in Sri Lanka. Raising awareness can help India achieve a respectable position in eye donation. If all deceased individuals donate their eyes, corneal blindness can be eradicated. The primary obstacles to eye donation are lack of awareness and religious superstitions. Donating eyes is not against religious beliefs; history is full of examples of great sacrifices, such as Sage Dadhichi donating his bones. If Dhritarashtra had sight, the Mahabharata might have been different. Economic Impact of Blindness According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (June 2022), maintaining a blind person costs approximately ₹1,000 per month. Additionally, an individual’s blindness leads to a production loss of about ₹150 per day, resulting in a national economic loss of approximately ₹800 crore annually. What is Corneal Transplantation? Corneal transplantation (keratoplasty) is a surgical procedure where a healthy cornea from a donated eye is transplanted into a patient with a damaged cornea. This intricate surgery requires high precision and is performed using a surgical microscope. The only source of a healthy cornea is donated eyes. With advances in medical science, a single cornea can now restore vision for up to three patients. How and When Can Eyes Be Donated? Eyes should be donated within six hours of death. Immediately after passing, the nearest eye bank should be contacted, and a medical team will collect the corneas at no cost. The eye removal process does not disfigure the face as an artificial lens is placed in the eye socket. Who Can Donate Eyes? Any person, irrespective of age, gender, or health conditions like diabetes, blood pressure, or asthma, can donate their eyes. However, eyes from individuals who passed due to infections like tuberculosis, AIDS, or septicemia cannot be used for transplantation. Eye Bank Society of Rajasthan – Ajmer Chapter’s Remarkable Work In 2024 alone, the Ajmer Chapter of the Eye Bank Society of Rajasthan collected 384 corneas, giving hundreds the gift of sight.
