Five lessons from the book: "Think Faster, Talk Smarter: How to Speak Successfully When You're Put on the Spot" by Matt Abrahams:
1. Don't Panic, It's Okay to Breathe: Our brains work better with oxygen! When you feel a rush of nervousness, take a slow breath or two. It helps you calm down and think a little clearer.
2. Slow Down, Speedy Gonzales!: Our tendency is to race through our words when nervous. Take your time, collect your thoughts, and speak at a normal pace. People will understand you better, and you'll sound more confident.
3. Listen Up, Even When You Want to Talk: Sometimes the best response is to listen carefully to what the other person is saying. This shows you're interested and helps you formulate a thoughtful response.
4. Simple is Powerful, Avoid Jargon Soup: Fancy words might sound impressive, but if no one understands them, it's not helpful. Use clear, everyday language to get your point across effectively.
5. Stuck for Words? Ask a Question!: If your mind goes blank, don't be afraid to ask a question to buy yourself some time to think. A simple "Can you tell me more about that?" can be a lifesaver.
