Shields (1937–2025), a global icon in ophthalmology and the pioneer who revolutionized ocular oncology. His passing is not only the end of an era but a moment of deep reflection for the countless lives he touched—with his knowledge, vision, and compassion. Dr. Shields, Director Emeritus at Wills Eye Hospital, was widely acknowledged as the father of modern ocular oncology. His groundbreaking use of plaque radiotherapy for conditions like choroidal melanoma and retinoblastoma transformed treatment—saving eyes, preserving vision, and saving lives. What was once considered untreatable became manageable, thanks to his brilliance. Author of 1,300+ peer-reviewed papers and 13 definitive textbooks, he mentored hundreds of fellows across the world, shaping generations of ocular oncologists. His books—like Intraocular Tumors: An Atlas and Text—are foundational resources in the field. We were fortunate to meet Dr. Shields at several AAO meetings. Despite his towering stature, he was humble, warm, and welcoming. A true healer, he combined surgical precision with the heart of a compassionate teacher and mentor. His legacy lives on—in every child whose vision was saved, every student he mentored, and every clinician who follows in his footsteps. His contributions as the founding President of the International Society of Ocular Oncology and as a recipient of the AAO Laureate Award and over 40 major honors reflect his immense impact.
