On January 20, 2025, a historic event unfolded in Bhawani Mandi, Jhalawar district, as 260,357 students collectively pledged to free themselves from the grips of addiction and digital dependency. This significant initiative has been recognized by the World Book of Records and stands as a beacon of inspiration for the entire nation, aiming to foster a positive societal change by steering the youth away from substance abuse and smartphone addiction. Addiction has a profound impact on the physical and mental health of children. Studies, such as those published in The American Journal on Addiction, reveal alarming figures, with around 2 million school children in the U.S. using drugs. In India, this issue is escalating, with nearly 10% of teenagers affected by substance abuse, according to a national survey. This addiction hampers children's cognitive abilities, self-control, and decision-making skills, leading to mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, and aggression. Similarly, the excessive use of smartphones has led to a rise in digital addiction among youth. The Journal of Behavioral Addiction reports that 25% of adolescents globally suffer from this dependency. In India, about 70% of school children are affected, resulting in physical and mental issues like reduced concentration, sleep disorders, and vision problems. Research from the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology highlights that 25% of school children in India suffer from digital eye strain, causing headaches, blurry vision, and eye irritation. The collective pledge by the students of Bhawani Mandi marks a significant step towards combating these issues. Such initiatives inspire other communities and schools to take similar actions, fostering a healthier environment for the younger generation. The Bohra community's efforts to keep children under 15 away from smartphones through activities like digital detox and traditional games further exemplify how collective efforts can shield children from digital addiction and pave the way for a better future. To combat these challenges, it is essential to educate children about the dangers of addiction, conduct awareness programs in schools, and encourage parental involvement. Parents should limit their mobile usage around children, engage in activities with them, and provide a supportive environment. Digital detox programs can also play a vital role, in helping children participate in physical and mental activities away from screens. Inspired by Bhawani Mandi's initiative and the Bohra community's efforts, it's crucial for other societies to organize similar programs, guiding children away from addiction and digital dependency. The future of our nation lies in the hands of our children, and it is the duty of every responsible citizen to ensure their well-being. Let us all join hands to create a healthy and safe future, free from the clutches of addiction and digital dependency. Dr. Suresh K.
